No real names or identifiable information is used to in this article to protect the privacy of all those involved. We will call the recovering addict Tony.
Tony grew up in a very wealthy, privileged family. He is the oldest of two male children. As a child he felt a lot of pressure from his father to be the best in everything. His family was very well to do and lived in a very nice two million dollar home. His father was a self made man, and had become very wealthy from his successes.
Tony and his family were very involved in their church. Tony was involved in many church activities and the youth group. He attended all youth group activities and most of the time that he spent socializing was at his church. He went to vacation bible school every year. When he was old enough, he taught vacation bible school to second graders. His life was constantly filled with positive activities that served to enhance him as a person and also served to keep him too busy to be able to get into trouble. He described his childhood as living in a perfectly safe bubble that was controlled by his father. He made sure that Tony did very well in everything and protected him from the bad elements in society. There was a lot of emphasis put on family honor and making sure as to not make ones family look disgraceful.
Tony was pretty much the perfect child and never got involved with anything that was not approved by his father as a kid. He was a very upstanding young man and was definitely surrounded by the finer things in life. One could say he grew up well to do in a privileged family.
From the time that Tony started school he made strait A’s. He quickly advanced to Advanced Placement classes. By the time he was in ninth grade he was taking AP calculus classes, just to give you an example of what kind of student Tony was. He also played sports.
Tony especially excelled in volley ball. He got so good at volley ball that he eventually played for the Junior American Olympic Team. He did this all through high school up until his junior year. Unfortunately, during his junior year of high school he played in a volley ball tournament in which he got severely injured. He ruptured a disk in his back and from then on he was unable to play volley ball anymore.
This was very unfortunate for Tony because volley ball had been a very big part of his life. He had worked very hard at it and had excelled in it so much that the loss of it in his life was very painful. He did not really know what to do with himself, except to go ahead and proceed with college the following year.
Tony was born in northern California. He spent his entire childhood there. When it was time for him to go to college, he ended up choosing a college that was located in southern California. It was a vey good college and he had a high GPA, but he didn’t know anyone. He was very lonely and bored for the most part of his first year in school. Most college kids partied a lot and Tony did not really know anything about that life style. Even if he had, he did not know anyone at first to party with. Pretty soon he met some people.
Tony ended up meeting some guys from one of the fraternities that was at the school. The fraternity seemed like the perfect place for him to join. There would be a lot of people around and would give him something to do with his extra time. He did end up joining it, but it ended up causing him more problems than he could ever imagine.
Tony started to hang out with some people that were at his fraternity that were really into partying. He felt accepted by his fraternity brothers and got into whatever they were doing. He ended up trying drugs for the first time at the age of nineteen. He smoked marijuana at one of the parties that was held in the house. He really like it, and ended up partying for the whole next summer.
After a while he got into the rave scene. He tried ecstasy and instantly loved it. He started using it all the time. He loved going to raves and getting high. He then branched out to many other drugs that were offered at the rave parties. He did cocaine, mushrooms, and methamphetamine. He and his friends would often use meth to stay up all night to study for tests. This party lifestyle continued until he graduated college.
When college was over he went back home a drugged out mess. His father told him that he either had to go to law school or medical school. Tony chose med school. He was still using drugs when he could at this time.
After he started medical school, he ended up meeting the partying crowd that was in attendance there as well. He soon fell in with a young man who was using a lot of methadone. Tony was at that point interested in getting high in whatever way he could, and when the guy offered him methadone he readily accepted.
The guy who gave him the methadone was prescribed a very large dose of methadone everyday. He could have taken 480 milligrams everyday if he had chosen. It was obviously way too much for the guy, so he had plenty to share with Tony. The young man did eventually die of liver failure from using so much methadone.
